The Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin bought this series of 10 photographs I took in 1993 for the book “Ruhrgebiet - DIe Menschen und ihre Region”. We went down a shaft 1200 meters below sea level and then drove with a small train 12 km horizontally to get to the actual mining area. It was incredibly loud down there because of the machinery and it was hot like being in hell: 50 degrees Celsius. An experience I will never forget.
